Math Storybooks!

In my quest to encourage my youngest in his math studies, I have stumbled upon math storybooks. I have never used them. I have never read them. In fact I didn't even know that math storybooks existed. I am familiar with number books and counting books, but that is as far as I thought math picture books went.

I was wrong.

Not only wrong, but these books look absolutely fun.
Colourful with engaging storyline and teaching math skills and concepts all throughout.

If you are unfamiliar with math storybooks here are a few I have stumbled upon,

Candy Groggers

I promised that we would make at least one  "pin" every month. So this month the boys completed the "pin"  for me. The pin is found here, candy grogger .

To start,  I went to my local dollar store to gather my supplies. I couldn't find the exact same jars but I did find similar ones. I also decided to keep it really simple and found sticker jewels that could easily be applied to the glass jars. Here are the supplies I came home with.

Next I gave each of the boys a jar and half the stickers. I let them stick them on the jars anyway they wanted.

Now comes the part the boys have been waiting for. We divided the box of candy between the two of them and they filled their jars.

They boys can't wait to eat the candy and shake their noise makers during the reading of the book of Esther. If you have never celebrated Purim, or if you have no idea what it is, read through the book of Esther for yourself and discover God's faithfulness to His people once again.

The Tabernacle

Last weeks Torah portion was on the building of the tabernacle. So we built a tabernacle after Sabbath complete with a Lego figure of Aaron. Behind the veil is a replica of the ark of the covenant and inside the ark is a container of manna, Aaron's rod and the tablets with the ten words.

The boys played with it for hours. They built paper tents to surround the tabernacle and filled them with Lego men. They tried to offer up burnt offerings by using a Lego horse and pretending that it was a bull or ram. I honestly didn't think that they would enjoy it so much but it has been a huge hit. They have played with it the entire past week.
